GPS Tracking
GPS tracking systems use the global positioning system (GPS) to establish the location of the item being tracked, e.g. a vehicle, and then transmit this information to the system’s base station. These systems usually have dispatcher/controller software that includes the facility to show the locations of the tracked items on a map. Other facilities are detailed below.
Other outdoor systems, e.g. covert, may rely on the direction-finding of the item being tracked. This may be achieved using a mobile-mounted detection system or perhaps radio receivers at fixed locations through which the tracked item is likely to travel/stop, e.g. major ferry terminals.
GPS leads to an increase in security and protection for drivers and vehicles.
GPS tracking systems can be covert or overt:
A covert tracking system may remain dormant until the vehicle or trailer on which it is mounted is, perhaps, stolen. At this time the mobile radio is activated remotely and the vehicle emits a regular transmission so that it may be traced. There is one system available that operates on a frequency that is used in most of Western Europe thereby enabling vehicles to also be activated and tracked whilst out of the UK.
An overt system may have (often software-based) facilities. These could include:
- Two-way communications and messaging between the controller and the vehicles
- Real-time location tracking
- The fleet utilisation and job despatching
- Geo-fencing
- Monitoring of cab and trailer systems
- Automatic and driver-activated alarms and alerts sent to mobile phones or email addresses
Internal Tracking
Tracking systems are typically used to show on a map the locations of tracking-enabled radio devices, e.g. handheld radios. Whereas outdoor tracking systems typically rely on the orbital global positioning system (GPS) satellites to operate, indoor systems use alternative technologies
A number of alternatives to GPS Tracking Systems are listed below that may be suitable for indoor use:
- Tracking Beacon Systems: This system offers the ability to locate users in areas where GPS tracking is not possible, e.g.within buildings.
- Electronic Token Tracking Systems: These systems consist of specially adapted radios to scan electronic tokens/badges positioned on a predetermined route. This system is an ideal tool for managing security guard rounds.
- Bluetooth Tracking Systems: Bluetooth tracking systems consist of
- Bluetooth sensors distributed within a building that are arranged so as to track known and/or anonymous Bluetooth devices.
- Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) Tracking Systems: This system uses sensors on specific items to track them in a building.
RFID
RFID is a tracking system that uses intelligent barcodes to track items in a store. An RFID system consists of a tag, which is made up of a microchip with an antenna, and an interrogator or reader with an antenna. The reader sends out electromagnetic waves.
