Schools may require two-way radio communications for a number of uses, including:
Multi-site schools may also require radio communications for the following uses:
Schools and the number of people within them can vary considerably in size and complexity:
Small schools may only require a small number of handheld radios that are all tuned to the same frequency and can be heard by all users simultaneously. In small schools, licence exempt PMR446 radios may be suitable and can also be used off-site on an ad-hoc basis, e.g. for school trips and external sports events. Simple UK licensed handheld radios are also available on a, likewise, shared UK-wide basis with other users. Normal licensed handhelds are, however, usually preferred when used permanently on a site because they are far less likely to suffer interference from adjacent users. Digital licensed radios can also offer additional security from casual eavesdropping when compared with analogue radios.
Medium sized schools may require a larger number of handheld radios, perhaps multi-channel, that are configured so that, normally, the different groups of users can only communicate within their group; with perhaps all users, or a sub-set of all users, being connected if an emergency message needs to be sent.
Large schools may require a centrally located multi-channel repeater base station with a large number of handheld radios. These systems can also be configured so that the different groups of users normally only communicate within their group; with all users, or perhaps a sub-set of all users e.g. senior staff and security, being connected if an emergency message needs to be sent. In addition, a dispatcher system may be installed so that a record of the timings of transmissions and voice recordings of their content can be compiled.
Multi-site schools, in addition to the above, may require interconnections between the sites, e.g. via a LAN.
Some schools may require specialised features. For example, handhelds that:
